Rooftop camping has existed almost as long as regular camping, with its creation stemming from a desire to see the stars whilst being safe from predators. These days, campers everywhere are embracing them – and it’s easy to see why. Rooftop camping is convenient, durable and low-cost. If this intrigues you, keep on reading below.

Considerations

Rooftop camping is appealing for a number of reasons. It’s easy to set up, comfortable and appropriate even when the ground is uneven or wet. Many options have flexible layouts, allowing you to attach a storage track or bike rack for extra storage.

Mounting the Rooftop Tent

Rooftop tents are mounted to the top of your vehicle.

Identify Your Budget

Rooftop tents are more cost-effective than other camping options, but it is still important to identify your budget. Keep in mind that rooftop tents require accessories – and whilst some are not necessary for the rooftop experience, they do add to it.

Style of Rooftop Tent

When getting started with rooftop camping, one of the first decisions you’ll make is between a hard shell and a soft shell. A soft shell, with its canvas walls and roof, resembles a standard tent. A hard shell, however, adds more protection, which is vital during transportation and intense weather.

Both soft and hard shells are easier to set up and fold, however, they do differ in prices – with hard shells being pricier than their alternative. In the long term, however, hard shells provide for a more comfortable experience, and are worth the investment.

At Custom Quip Engineering, our iKamper tents have a double-layered, aerodynamic hard shell, making it soundproof, condensation resistant and windproof. Whether its rainy or windy, you’ll be dry and cosy inside our iKamper rooftop tents.

Models

Once you’ve identified the style of tent that best suits you, the next step involves identifying your needs and a model that will meet them. Our iKamper rooftop tents come in two models. For two or three passengers, our Skycamp 2 is ideal. Our Skycamp 4, on the other hand, sleeps four people and is supplied with a king size mattress.

Extra Space

The beauty of rooftop camping is that it can be customised to match your needs. If you’d like more space, adding an annex room will increase the comfort and space you have, transforming your rooftop experience. You can also choose to add an awning, or outdoor storage space, because compromising on comfort isn’t a camping requirement.
